Having a breadth of experience in both liberal arts and university curriculums, I am qualified to teach in a variety of institutional settings. At Northwestern I have developed the skills necessary to manage complex curricular and organization requirements: I’ve completed a teaching certificate program, have worked as a new TA mentor, and served as Head TA for several highly enrolled classes. Over the past year, I’ve been working as contributor with the Teaching Law and Religion Archive, learning how to implement interactive case modules and insights from the digital humanities to foster humanistic and social scientific inquiry that is widely accessible and relevant. As a scholar of the politics of religion, a field characterized by conflicts of seemingly irreconcilable worldviews, I am a strong believer in the role of higher education to create more open-minded and inclusive modes of engaging with opinions and experiences vastly different from one’s own. I am committed to promoting inclusive learning environments, and have participated in programs on issues including disability, learning styles, and ways of supporting LGBTQ students, as well as those of diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. These concerns reflect my approach to course design: using theoretical, historical, and contemporary material from diverse viewpoints, students learn that it is an intellectual necessity to question what is taken for granted and to respect, rather than dismiss, diverse perspectives. Please see my Teaching Statement and Diversity Statement for a brief overview of how I approach this pedagogical mission.
